Children can become very fearful of certain objects or situations and this can interfere with their daily life. A quick and effective way to treat these phobias is to encourage the child to gradually “get used” to being around examples of what they fear. We are offering psychological therapy to children who are very fearful dogs or spiders. For this treatment, we are interested in whether a single dose of antibiotic medication called D-Cycloserine (DCS) can improve the exposure therapy.

Who can participate?

We are treating children aged 6-14 years, who are very frightened of dogs or spiders and want help for their phobia.

What will happen if my child participates?

There are three main parts to this treatment:
1. Phone Interview: You would first of all need to speak to the researcher over the phone to see if your child is suitable to be involved.
2. Assessment and Treatment: You and your child would need to come to the clinic to perform a phobia assessment and participate in the exposure therapy (about 3 hours duration).
3. Assessment and Follow-Up Treatment: One week later you and your child will return to the clinic to complete an assessment and receive follow-up treatment (about 2 hours duration).
Note: We will ask you and your child to complete surveys during the treatment and follow-up sessions.

Is there any cost?

There is no cost for this treatment.

What if my child continues to have difficulties with anxiety?

If your child continues to have difficulties, we will arrange an additional referral to the Emotional Health Clinic or elsewhere.
